ATM at antartica

There is an ATM at McMurdo Station in Antarctica.

Today, McMurdo Station is Antarctica's largest community and a functional, modern day science station, which includes a harbour, 3 airfields[3] (2 seasonal), a heliport and over 100 buildings, including the Albert P. Crary Science and Engineering Center and a bowling alley with an antique Brunswick manual pinset machine. There is even a 9-hole disc golf course on site. The station is also home to the continent's only ATM, provided by Wells Fargo Bank. The primary focus of the work done at McMurdo Station is science, but most of the residents (approximately 1,000 in the summer and fewer than 200 in the winter) are not scientists, but station personnel who are there to provide support for operations, logistics, information technology, construction, and maintenance.

Chocolate Chip cookies were a mistake

send in by: @lentebriesje

The inventor - or creator - of the chocolate chip cookie was Ruth Wakefield. In 1924, Ruth Wakefield after graduating from Framingham State Normal School's Department of Household Arts, she lectured on food and worked as a dietitian. After marrying, she and her husband bought a tourist lodge (bed and breakfast) and called it the "Toll House Inn."

Sound familiar?

Well the chocolate chip cookie actually came about by sheer accident. Ruth Wakefield was responsible for, and cooked the meals of, the guests at Toll House Inn. She had a special recipe called Butter Drop Do cookies. This recipe called for crumbled baker's chocolate - a bitter chocolate if you've ever taken a bite.

One day while baking away, Ruth realized she did not have any baker's chocolate on hand, but she did have a semi-sweet chocolate bar. So she cut that up into bits and pieces and added it to her recipe. Unlike baker's chocolate which melts down completely, the semi-sweet pieces only partially melted. Leaving those lovely bits of chocolate we all love so much. And, of course, her cookies were a big hit with her guests.

But the story doesn't end there...

The misused chocolate bar was actually a gift from Andrew Nestle - of yes, the Nestle Chocolate Company. As Ruth's cookies grew and grew in popularity so did the sale of Nestle's semi-sweet chocolate bars!

It wasn't long before Andrew Nestle and Ruth Wakefield struck a deal which was Ruth's printed recipe on the back of every package of Toll House Chocolate Chips. In return for getting the recipe, Ruth received a lifetime's supply of Nestle's chocolate.

Up To 80% of All US Bills Contain Trace Amounts of Cocaine

In one 1985 study done by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration on the money machines in a U.S. Federal Reserve district bank, random samples of $50 and $100 bills revealed that a third to a half of all the currency tested bore traces of cocaine. Moreover, the machines themselves were often found to test positive, meaning that subsequent batches of cash fed through them would also pick up cocaine residue. Expert evidence given before a federal appeals court in 1995 showed that three out of four bills randomly examined in the Los Angeles area bore traces of the drug.

In a 1997 study conducted at the Argonne National Laboratory, nearly four out of five one-dollar bills in Chicago suburbs were found to bear discernable traces of cocaine. In another study, more than 135 bills from seven U.S. cities were tested, and all but four were contaminated with traces of cocaine. These bills had been collected from restaurants, stores, and banks in cities from Milwaukee to Dallas.

Aphids reproduce asexual

Parthenogenesis, or asexual reproduction, is the first key to an aphid's long family tree. With few exceptions, aphids in spring and summer are all females. The first wingless matriarchs hatch from eggs in early spring, equipped to reproduce without the need for male mates. Within a few weeks, these females produce more females, and soon after that, the third generation arrives. And so on, and so on, and so on. The aphid population expands exponentially without the benefit of a single male.

Seastar

Seastars are quite strange creatures in the sense as they do not have a brain, eyes or a spine. Seastars have a complex nervous system which is able to interpret - light, temperature, touch and water parameters. They have no specific sensory organs (eyes, ears etc.) for these functions.
